PE Progression of Skills
Intent
At Rothley C of E Academy, we are committed to delivering a PE curriculum that promotes each child's physical and emotional health. We provide a comprehensive and balanced curriculum that builds on fundamental movement skills, encouraging our pupils to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Our intent is to promote enjoyment, resilience, and self-confidence in each child, allowing them to develop not only physical abilities but also important life skills.
The curriculum is designed to highlight key areas such as teamwork, cooperation, and fair play, ensuring that children acquire values they will carry throughout life. This will include our Christian values such as respect, perseverance, trust and compassion being developed via different pathways including playing, coaching and officiating. We also teach critical safety skills, including swimming to make sure our pupils have the ability to keep safe outside of school. Our curriculum, delivered through the PE Hub, promotes progressive growth in areas such as agility, balance, and coordination acquired through high quality teaching and engaging lessons.
We believe physical education is a gateway to learning essential behaviours—personal, social, creative, cognitive, and physical—that benefit children beyond PE, positively influencing their overall learning and development. The acquired skills serve as a foundation for participating in sports competitions and sports day, where the children can showcase their skill and passion for sport. Supported by Sports Premium Funding, our PE provision meets the five key performance indicators, ensuring that every child thrives in a dynamic and inclusive environment at Rothley C of E Academy.
Impact
We encourage children to participate in a variety of different sports which are motivated through high quality teaching. Lessons are engaging and competitive for all pupils, which adds a fun aspect to the lesson. When teaching P.E., a plan is in place as a progression for students to improve their skills further. In each lesson it will show students how to take responsibility for their health. Every student will have the correct skills in a variety of sports and a strong ambition to learn about and participate in new sports. Over the years, they will use the skills they have learned in PE and focus on their health and fitness. By competing in sports and activities it will help build students character and embed values such as respect and fair play.
